Miracord Turntables

ELAC was founded in 1926. In the early years the company focused on the development of sonar technologies. Like many German companies, they converted to consumer products in the postwar period.

ELAC began developing turntables and the first was released on December 14th, 1948. In 1957 ELAC was awarded German Patent No. 1 105 628 for an “electro-magnetic pick-up for two-channel record modulation.” This formed the basis of moving magnet cartridges we use today and established ELAC as a leading manufacturer of phono cartridges.

In the 1960 and early 1970s production boomed, but had declined by the end of the decade. In 1979 the production of the MH870 ceased and the new owner changed the company focus to loudspeakers. Production carried on for a few more years but the last turntable finally left the production line in 1981.

Miracord 90

In 2016 ELAC celebrated it’s 90th year. To celebrate this ELAC has looked back to it’s rich history of turntables and designed a new model – The Miracord 90 Anniversary. Wilfrid Werner, the designer (and the uncle of the current quality manager Thomas Werner) of the last Miracord turntable came out of retirement to assist the ELAC R&D team with the new design.

The 5.5 kg MDF chassis rests on specially developed silicone feet that decouple the deck completely from the surface on which it is placed. The 6Kg solid aluminum platter sits on a sub-platter whose hardened steel axis rotates on an 8mm ruby ball for minimal friction. The axis is mounted using high-quality sintered bronze bearing bushings. The motor is double-decoupled with sorbothane mountings and an independent suspension derived form ELAC’s loudspeaker experience. The turntable comes complete with a carbon fibre tonearm and fitted with a cartridge built by Audio Technica to ELAC specifications.

“Once past the irresistible looks, superb construction and ease-of- use, you realise the Miracord 90 is sonically something special. Even with its standard cartridge …, the warmth, scale and solidity will prove tantalisingly seductive to listeners who value veracity and lushness. ELAC may have resisted nostalgia in the design, but the sound is blessedly Golden Age. Danke!”
